About Us
We started Central Coast Outdoors as a California bike tour company in 2003 because we are passionately committed to providing you with the California bicycle tour experience you are looking for. Years of bicycling in different parts of California have given us an insider's perspective on the best places to ride and stay. The Central Coast of California (including the Monterey Peninsula, Big Sur Coast and the winery areas of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties) is the home bike tour range of our bike tour company, but we plan and run bicycle tours all over California, including the North Coast, Napa/Sonoma and long distance bike tours down any stretch of the California Coast. Virtually all our custom multi-day guided bike tours will have at least one of the owners and often members of our capable support staff on the tour. Come join us!

In addition to California, John has ridden his bike in Europe, New Zealand, Patagonia and the Southwestern US. John has been guiding bike tours all over the world since 1991 for bike touring companies, but his favorite place to ride bikes is coastal California. "Riding down Highway One north of San Francisco or along the Big Sur coast is an experience no dedicated bicyclist should miss," according to John. Planning bike tours is almost as fun for John as is running them. As a bicycle tour operator running a bike tour company, he loves taking people's specific needs and desires and coming up with a bike tour that fits the bill. John graduated from Dartmouth in 1987 with a B.A in History and enjoys photography, backpacking and kayaking in addition to bicycling.

Virginia Flaherty

Virginia is a true world traveler and has led bike tours all across Europe, Hawaii, and New Zealand, in addition to California. As a child and young adult, she lived for several years in Germany and has also traveled to Indonesia, China and Bhutan. She is our Napa/Sonoma expert, having led many bicycle tours there over the years for bike touring companies. Virginia has also developed a knack for creating smooth running events and trips, no matter the size or complexity. "I get a kick out of taking the hassle out of trips so people can focus on why they are really there, to be biking and having fun in a beautiful natural place." Virginia graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1985 with a B.A. in German Language and Literature.

John and Virginia met while working for Backroads (another bike touring company in California) and were married in 1995. They have one daughter, Kinley, who was born in 2001.
